Mold is a natural part of an ecosystem, and it is common for there to be a fungal bloom when you first set up your BioActive enclosure. This is all a part of your ecosystem cycling and establishing itself! That being said too much visible mold being consistent can be a sign of your ecosystem not establishing itself properly or a struggling clean-up crew.
Moss doesn't inherently attract mold, but it creates the perfect damp environment for it to thrive. Because moss needs high humidity to thrive, it can become a breeding ground for mold spores if the enclosure lacks adequate airflow or has a struggling "clean-up crew"

Why Mold Grows on Moss
High Moisture & Humidity: Moss requires constant dampness, which is the exact condition fungal spores need to germinate and spread.

Stagnant Air: Poor ventilation prevents the moss from drying out sufficiently between mistings, speeding up mold growth.
Transition Periods: New bioactive enclosures frequently experience "mold blooms" as the mini-ecosystem cycles and stabilizes.
Preserved Moss: Dyed or preserved mosses rot and mold much faster than live moss when exposed to terrarium humidity
How to Prevent and Manage Mold
Boost the Clean-Up Crew (CUC): Ensure your substrate is heavily populated with springtails and isopods. Springtails actively eat mold and will keep outbreaks in check.
Improve Ventilation: If mold is a constant issue, increase your enclosure's airflow (e.g., adding fans or using a more porous mesh top) so the surface moss can breathe.
Adjust Misting: Reduce the frequency of your misting cycles to let the moss dry out slightly on the surface without completely dying.
Use Live Moss: Stick to live terrarium mosses instead of dyed, preserved decorative mosses, which are highly susceptible to rotting.
