Hardscape- What is it and why is it important?

Hardscape is the non-living components in your BioActive Build. These are non-living Structural elements that form the backbone of your enclosure's design. These elements could be wood, stone, or plastic objects incorporated into your enclosure. Hardscape elements do not decay quickly and create hiding, climbing, and basking opportunities.
Hardscapes serve a vital role in your bioactive enclosure's ecosystem. They create localized zones of shade, retain moisture, and create temperature gradients. They provide structural support for your animal and plants alike; hardscape offers anchoring points for epiphytes, mosses, and vining plants. In addition to providing support for your plants, hardscape can also aid your cleanup crew! They are given surface area and hiding spots for them to inhabit and explore.

Listed below are the three most common hardscapes found in BioActive enclosures!
Wood
Not every wood type is suitable for a BioActive enclosure, depending on the overall humidity levels. Certain wood types are more suitable for Arid or Dry environments, and others can withstand the humidity of the tropics. If a wood that is unsuitable for a humid environment is placed there, it can lead to issues arising in your BioActive Build; these issues can include: molding, rot, leaching, and a few others. Overall, it is important to know which wood is right for you and your animal's home. That being said, there are certain wood species that are suitable for all enclosure types- both tropical and Arid.
Rocks, Stones, and Minerals
Just like the wood- not all Rock/mineral types are suitable or considered safe for a BioActive enclosure. Certain rocks aren't waterproof, and when they're exposed to water they can leach compounds into your substrate that can change the PH of your ecosystem. This can throw off the balance in your ecosystem and can lead to harm for your animals. That being said there are many stones and minerals you can incorporate into your enclosure that won't harm your ecosystem or animals. Some of my favorite stones to incorporate for enrichment are sandstone and amethyst
Plastic/Ceramic Waterbowls
Water is the source of life both in nature and in our animals' enclosure. The water bowl provides a cool spot not only for your animal to enjoy but also for your clean-up crew!
